My Journey Into Minimalism
And what it means to me…
About a year ago, I was doing my daily scroll through Youtube and stumbled upon The Minimalists. A podcast by Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus. At first, it was a little puzzling because I couldn’t figure out why Youtube’s algorithm placed one of their videos in my feed. However, I happened to be in the mood for something different and watched the video. But at the end of the video, something happened. I found myself watching another one of their videos, then another, then another, and before I knew it, a couple of hours of watching their videos had passed. What was even weirder, was that once I found a stopping point, I got up, walked over to my closet, and pulled out a couple of my old computers. Popping off the lids on the chassis, I removed the hard drives (needed to check those for any of my personal data), then took them out to my back porch to be picked up for recycling.
In the following days, I slowly continued to find unused stuff around my house that, for such a long time, held some sort of value to me. Or at least I thought they did. As I accumulated these things and got rid of them, I immediately began to feel a sense of relief, and a sense of joy. Like the weight of the world had just been lifted off of my shoulders. These meaningless things that I hadn’t used in years, that had followed me every time I moved…
